2017 Curriculum outline Art

Term 1


Foundation:  Welcome to Coburg North’s newest artists! Students in Foundation will be learning about shape through paper collage, and building their skills in using scissors and other common art tools. Later on in the term, students will be mixing paint both incidentally and purposefully to explore the primary colours and how they can be used to create secondary colours.

 

Grade 1: Focus will be on ceramics with further exploration of the possibilities of clay. Students will complete teacher directed as well as free choice pieces. Selected works by ceramic artists will be discussed.

 

Grade 2: Focus will be mainly on painting and painters. Students will paint on various surfaces and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with others. The works of the Heidelberg school will be discussed.

 

Grade 3/4: Focus will be on mixed media with collage using a variety of materials being a feature. Selected works by well known artists will be discussed.

 

Grade 5/6: Focus will be on Pop Art and a number of works modeled on several well known Pop artists will be completed.


Term 2

 

Foundation: This term, students will be exploring some three-dimensional paper folding techniques and using them in a range of different art forms. In the second half of the term, students will be introduced to weaving both in paper and textile form. Both of these studies will help students to develop their fine-motor skills and apply their creativity in new ways. As always, students are supported to share their ideas and feelings about their own, and others’, art works. We look forward to sharing our learning with you throughout the term! Grade 1: Focus will be mainly on painting and painters. Students will have various painting experiences, including painting on a number of surfaces and working with others to produce a work of art.  The works of Vincent Van Gogh will be looked at and discussed.

 

Grade 2: Focus will be mainly on ceramics and extending skills in that medium. Students will complete teacher directed as well as free choice pieces. The works of Vincent Van Gogh will be looked at and discussed.

 

Grade 3/4: Focus will be on drawing, using various materials and on various surfaces. The works of Vincent Van Gogh will be looked at and discussed.

 

Grade 5/6: Focus will be mainly on drawing for various purposes for example CD covers, pavement art, landscape and portrait. The works of Vincent Van Gogh will be discussed. 

 

Term 3

 

 

 

Foundation

 

This term, students will be involved in a unit of work developing their portraiture skills. This will culminate in students’ portraits being exhibited in our very own CNPS Young “Archies” Award (similar to the Archibald Prize)! Our work will be on display in the school hall and the school public will be encouraged to view and vote on a work to be awarded the ‘People’s Choice’ award. Later on in the term we will be investigating printmaking and dyeing, with will include looking at how we can use colour, shape and pattern to make our artworks more effective. As always, students are supported to share their ideas and feelings about their own, and others’, art works. We look forward to sharing our learning with you throughout the term! Grades 1 and 2

 

The main focus will be on drawing, using various materials and on a variety of surfaces. Simple perspective will be introduced and drawing the human form will be practiced. Students will look at and discuss the work of well known artists including Hokusai, whose work is currently being exhibited at the NGV.

 


Grades 3 and 4

 

The focus this term will be on ceramics. Students will have opportunities to practise skills and techniques and extend these. Teacher directed as well as free choice pieces will be completed. The work of Hokusai will be looked at and discussed.

 

 

 

Grades 5 and 6

 

Multi-media pieces will be the focus for this term. Students will have opportunities to complete 2D and 3D works and will have choices as to materials and how to combine these effectively. Also, the work of Hokusai will be explored and discussed.
