Coburg North follows the Better Buddies Program, an initiative developed by the Alannah & Madeline Foundation. The program is designed to create friendly and caring primary school communities. Buddy systems are designed to support Foundation students in their first year of school through working with older students as role models.

The Better Buddies Framework has specifically designed buddy activities focusing on curriculum, social skills, values and benefits for the younger and older buddies.

All Foundation students are matched with a Grade 3 or 4 student and are involved in cross-age classroom sessions where they complete tasks together. “Big Buddies” and “Little Buddies” also look out for one another in the playground. The Better Buddies Program helps the Foundation students feel safe and comfortable as they transition into the school environment and benefits the social development of all students. It provides the Grade 3 and 4 students with an excellent opportunity to show leadership skills and promote the values of our school.

In 2017 we introduced in our junior playground buddy bench a Buddy Bench. This bench was made by one of our school parents and is a beautifully made piece of furniture that looks great in the garden environment in our playground.

The buddy bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. If a child does not have anyone to play with and would like to play with somebody they sit on the Buddy Bench. Other students can then approach the student on the bench and invite them to play.
